Adult’s Complete Checkup
Do I Need a Dental Implant?
When you lose teeth, you lose bone. Not only where the teeth are missing but also in the surrounding area. This is especially true the earlier it happens. Missing teeth affect your nutrition, health, and looks and make it difficult to speak. Dental implants are useful in a variety of circumstances including connecting with your dentures. Implants help us have an improved ability to eat and a healthier diet compared to the past alternatives.
The implant procedure takes place over the course of two phases:
- Implant Placement: The surgical procedure in which the implant posts are inserted in the jawbone beneath the gum line. Screw-like posts are made from titanium and are absorbed by your jawbone to replace your missing tooth root. You will typically receive a temporary tooth replacement until your mouth has healed.
- Implant Restoration: The final stage that occurs once the implant posts have fused with the jawbone and the mouth has begun healing after the surgery. This is where you will receive your permanent tooth replacement.
At Meadowlark Dental, we help our patients restore their smiles by completing the second step of the process and attaching the final replacement tooth.

What Happens During Dental Implant Restoration?
Dental implants are paired with dental crowns to achieve full tooth replacement. At our practice, we offer high-quality porcelain crowns to restore the natural look, strength and function of your missing tooth. Implant restoration occurs once the implant posts have fused with the surrounding jawbone and fully healed. The process is called osseointegration and can take 4-6 months, creating a sturdy, natural foundation and replacement tooth root for the replacement tooth to be attached.
During the implant restoration, the implant posts are exposed under the gums and a connecting abutment will be attached. After another brief healing period of 1-2 weeks, you’ll return to the office for the final procedure. Now the dentist will place your crown, bridge, or denture by attaching it to the connecting abutments.

Not only do we check ourselves in the examination, but we also ask you what concerns or questions you might have with the exam. Should something out of the ordinary present itself, we will cover that with you and set up the next steps to address it. These types of exams are important for both our oral health and our overall health.

If areas are missed in brushing and flossing, the plaque can harden into tartar or calculus, a combination of different types of hard bacteria. It requires our equipment and expertise to remove it safely. This type of hard bacteria is not beneficial; it attacks the teeth and more, both on the outside layers of the bacteria you see, and the inside layer against the tooth and gums.
Our hygienists can professionally cleanse these areas, leaving your mouth refreshed, but more importantly, cleaned and healthier.
